Okay, I’m rewatching the finale and in the flashback where Damon meets Elena, Elena’s already looking at Damon like he’s the BEST thing that’s ever happened to her. And I know that the writers keep pushing Stelena as this “epic” love story thing (which I’m never gonna buy…

Elena’s whole death scene, in a way, relies heavily on Damon’s reaction.
Elena’s death scene almost hinges on Damon’s reaction. In between the shots of Elena’s death, we have Alaric’s death. Damon realizes that she’s dying and his reaction is part of what makes the whole scene heartbreaking. Even more importantly, we see his reaction. We see his horror when he realizes she’s dead, and we see it again at the hospital. ”Where is she?!”
All we see at the hospital with Stefan is him sitting by her body, looking forlorn. We barely see any of Stefan’s emotions towards the situation. We see Damon’s.
If you think about it, a large part of the episode revolves around Damon and Elena. No, she didn’t pick him. No, she wasn’t going to go to him. But her phone call with him alone had more emotion that Stefan and Elena had in the whole episode.
And on top of all that, she met him first.
